ABOUT KELIR

Hello! We are an Indonesian natural-dye company that embodies traditional knowledge, folk art & intangible cultural heritage. Our products are crafted with all-natural ingredients & reductors, and handmade traditionally by local artists in limited quantities.

CO-CREATION WITH LOCAL ARTISTS

Zahir Widadi’s indigo-dyed batik for KELIR is based on the pattern ‘tanahan’ (earth), a pattern that used to be hidden as a background in a piece of batik cloth. Zahir decided to combine these two hidden elements of batik together: the blue of indigo and the tanahan pattern–and give them enough space to be noticed and admired as a centerpiece. Each indigo-dyed batik from Zahir has its own tint of blue and its own unique design–and if you look closely and feel it, you can guess which fabric is feminine and which is masculine.

Our galaran indigo-dyed fabric is now officially licensed to @rengganis.id_ for Riri Rengganis’ current exclusive collection! Riri Rengganis–an Indonesian designer–reinterpreted our galaran fabric into a beautiful, elegant, and flowy outerwear, hand-embroidered featuring the shape of celery leaves. Galaran is one of KELIR’s indigo-dyed cotton fabrics by renowned batik artist and anthropologist, Zahir Widadi. The galaran motif is inspired by Indonesia’s ancient woven textile, ikat—and the fabric is indigo-dyed traditionally, solely with natural reductor. Each one is hand-stamped with a 3-mm batik copper plate from Landung Sari village in Pekalongan and produced in limited quantities.
